Discern expands Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) Capabilities For Life Sciences clients

September 2018

Health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) has long been important for health care market access outside the U.S., but it is increasingly being utilized in the U.S. as part of the movement from volume- to value-based health care. Payers are asking for more evidence of improved outcomes and lower costs to inform decisions about coverage and payment, while patients and providers need evidence to make informed decisions as they sharpen their focus on patient-centered care and precision medicine. In addition, regulators are increasingly accepting real-world evidence studies for regulatory approval. Life sciences companies must have a thorough U.S. and international value strategy with strong evidence about the impact of their products and a strategy for success in this changing environment.

To meet the growing need, Discern Health is pleased to offer expanded HEOR capabilities to pharmaceutical and medical device companies. These capabilities include qualitative analyses, such as scans of the value landscape both in and outside the U.S., payer evidence needs assessments, and evidence gap analyses. Discern also offers quantitative analyses such as studies of the burden of illness, disease prediction models, outcomes studies, and budget impact models. We translate findings from these analyses into thorough, customized HEOR and market access strategies, including evidence generation plans and value proposition development. Our focus on quality and work with organizations across the health care industry gives us a unique understanding of the priorities and needs of patients, providers, payers, and other stakeholders, which is critical for a successful HEOR strategy.

Discern’s HEOR capabilities build on our existing work focused on quality measurement and value-based payment, and they utilize the deep research skills of our growing staff. Discern team members are skilled in a wide range of quantitative and qualitative research approaches and hold Ph.D.s in health services research and epidemiology, as well as M.D., R.N., J.D., and M.P.H. credentials.

For more information about Discern’s HEOR capabilities, please contact Discern Vice President Russ Montgomery, Ph.D., M.H.S., at rmontgomery@discernhealth.com.
